The Feast of Corpus Christi was instituted as a result of the visions of a nun, St Juliana of Liege, who had a great devotion to the eucharist. She saw the moon with a dark stripe crossing it.

In today’s gospel, Jesus describes himself not only as a shepherd but as the gate of the sheepfold. Gates are powerful symbols. The Romans actually had a god of gateways, Janus.

Born at the end of the twelfth century, St Juliana was the instigator of the feast of Corpus Christi.
