Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time

It must have taken a great amount of courage for Jesus to turn in the direction of Jerusalem, knowing what lay in front of him. It must have been difficult also to confront Peter, possibly an older man, who meant well but did not understand the mission of the one he had proclaimed as the Christ. Peter and the other disciples had seen their Lord as authoritative preacher, healer and miracle-worker. They looked back to the golden days of King David and saw Jesus as restoring his kingdom. They did not realise that God was going to turn this kingship on its head.

"If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself, and take up his cross and follow me."
