A wedding is often used as a symbol of God’s union with his people. In the Apocalypse John is told to write: “Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb” (Apoc.19:90). Jesus has been speaking in parables to the chief priests and elders. They are the ones who not only refuse the invitation but who plot the murder of the bridegroom.
The first reading from Isaiah paints a picture of a God who will provide a rich banquet for all peoples. The kingdom of Judah was threatened at that time with trouble and uncertainty, with powerful countries threatening them. The reading is a little apocalypse, like the last book of the bible, promising hope to those who were suffering so badly.
God, the king, issues invitations to the marriage of his Son. Jesus, the son, comes to bring salvation to the chosen people; but they have other priorities and not only do they spurn the invitation but they assault the messengers. The invitation is then extended to others, who come to the feast. One man does not wear a wedding garment. God is generous but he expects his generosity to be reciprocated in loving care for our brothers and sisters. The man had accepted the invitation but had not bothered to dress appropriately. He had not put on the garment of Christ.
"Rather clothe yourself with Jesus Christ." (Romans 13:14)
