By long tradition, plenary indulgences for the souls of the departed may be gained in November as follows:
On All Souls Day
A plenary indulgence for the holy souls may be gained once between noon on 1 November and midnight on 2 November, by visiting a church or oratory and there reciting one Our Father and the Apostles' Creed. The person making this prayer must:
- Have recently received the Sacrament of Confession
- Have received Holy Communion
- Have prayed for the Pope's intentions: one Our Father and one Hail Mary, or any other prayer of one's choice.
On any day in November
A plenary indulgence for the holy souls may be gained once each day between 1 and 8 November, by visiting a cemetery and praying for the dead. The same conditions as above (confession, communion and prayer for the pope's intentions) are also required.
