Plenary Indulgences in November

By long tradition, plenary indulgences for the souls of the departed may be gained in November as follows:

On All Souls Day

A plenary indulgence for the holy souls may be gained once between noon on 1 November and midnight on 2 November, by visiting a church or oratory and there reciting one Our Father and the Apostles' Creed. The person making this prayer must:

  • Have recently received the Sacrament of Confession
  • Have received Holy Communion
  • Have prayed for the Pope's intentions: one Our Father and one Hail Mary, or any other prayer of one's choice.

On any day in November

A plenary indulgence for the holy souls may be gained once each day between 1 and 8 November, by visiting a cemetery and praying for the dead. The same conditions as above (confession, communion and prayer for the pope's intentions) are also required.

The crypt of the Cathedral is open for the month of November, and this plenary indulgence may be gained by praying there.
