West Liberty University Singers, from West Virginia in the USA, give a concert in the Cathedral on Sunday 6 March 2016 at 20:00, where they are joined by the NUI Galway staff & student choirs and a small orchestra of wind, harp, strings & organ. The programme includes a performance of Requiem for the Living by Dan Forrest and extracts from Bernstein's Chichester Psalms.

Admission is free; a collection will be taken in aid of breast cancer research.

West Liberty University Singers

Led by Dr Scott Glysson, the WLU Singers are an elite group with membership gained by audition with the director. The choir consists of both music and non-music undergraduate students and represents the University at on- and off-campus events, maintaining an active performance schedule. The choir also tours both within and without the USA, with current and future engagements including Italy, Spain and Ireland.

Scott Glysson (Director)

Scott Glysson is Director of Choral Activities at West Liberty University. Dr Glysson has been recognised for his achievements in conducting in both choral and orchestral genres. As a conductor of university, high school and community ensembles, he has performed both nationally and internationally. Under his leadership as Artistic Director of the Tucson Masterworks Chorale, the group’s excellence was recognised through an invitation to perform in Lincoln Centre's Avery Fischer Hall in March 2014. As a student, he received the George Mason University College of Fine Arts award for Outstanding Music Student for his achievements in the areas of choral and orchestral conducting. As a graduate student, Dr Glysson was honored as one of eight finalists from across the country to compete in the National Choral Conducting Competition sponsored by the American Choral Directors Association. Previously, Dr Glysson served as Assistant Director of the internationally-recognized Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus. While living in Northern Virginia he held the position of Director of Music at Floris United Methodist Church and teaching positions at several high schools in the Washington DC area. He also served as Artistic Director and founder of the Floris Concert Series, where he organised and conducted major-work charity concerts with chorus and orchestra. He has also held the position of Assistant Conductor of the Reston Chorale, one of the Washington DC area’s most celebrated choruses.

Johathan Emmons (Organist)

Jonathan Emmons resides in Greensboro, North Carolina, and is active as a freelance pianist, organist and conductor in the region. He is also Organist and Director of Choirs at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Greensboro. He has previously served as Director of Choirs and Assistant Professor of Music at Wesley College, Dover, DE, and as assistant conductor of the Choral Society of Greensboro. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Bridgewater College and a Master of Music in choral conducting from the University of Michigan, and currently studies voice as a countertenor.
